activities. Highlighted below are some exciting new course offerings.

Fall Social Skills Term
begins September 17
All courses are taught wih special consideration to
characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders, specifically Asperger
Syndrome and High Functioning Autism.
New Time: Developing Friendships
Through Play/
Ages
3-5
Participating in symbolic and pretend play are precursors to understanding
the perspectives of others, which is necessary in all parts of
academic and social success. Instruction, demonstrations, modeling,
practice, and promotion of transfer and generalization increase skills and
opportunites for positvie social interactions.
New Format: Kids
Chat-N-Chill/Ages 8-12
This course presenst core curricula and then moves on to emulate the format
of the Teens Talk & Teens Rock course. Each session begins with an hour
of social skills training followed by a guided social activity or excursion
that provides opportunities for skill generalization.
New Course: American Girls
Self-Awareness (Girls Only at Excelsior)/Ages 8-12
Based on the American Girls books and ideas, the intent of this new
course is to focus on expanding skills with Mind and Body,
Relationships, and Be Your Best. Girls will learn the definition, and
characteristics of what makes a great friend, how to deal with and
express feelings in a positive way, and how to deal with many emotions
including fear, anxiety, and jealousy.
New Course: Tweens Talk &
Rock: Fitting in at Middle School/Ages 11-14
For those entering or already in Middle School to help learn and practice
the written and unwritten rules and social codes so they can fit in, be
successful and have fun.
New Course: Teens Talk & Rock:
Cracking Current Communication Codes/Ages 14-19
Reports indicate that only seven percent of the emotional meaning in
language is actually expressed with words. This course provides
instruction, demonstrations and rehearsals that develop, improve, and
expand upon individuals nonverbal communication skills.
New Times: Teens and Young Adults
Talk & Rock: Transition to Work or Transition to College/Ages 14-21
New Format: Game and Hang Time
(Saturdays at Excelsior)

Note: September
Sleepover will be Cabin Camping at Baker Park. Sept.
22 from 2PM - Sept. 23 at 12PM. Space is limited due to
cabin reservations. All participants will be transported from
the Excelsior
Center and should be
dropped off and picked up there. $210.00 fee includes all
charges.

Mark McCaghy
Has a B.S. in Special Education and
Cognitive Disabilities K-12 from the University of Wisconsin.
Has completed class requirements for the Autism Certificate at Hamline University. Has seven years of
experience teaching special education at Lakeville, St.
Louis Park, Eden Prairie, and
Chaska along with eight years at Camp
Hand in Hand as a
counselor and program staff.
