Social Skills Therapy (“Friendship”) Groups”

Debra Schipper -- Biography

Possessing at least adequate reciprocal social communication and interaction skills is crucial to everyone’s success and happiness. Children and young adults identified with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) do not “pick up” these crucial life skills without direct instruction, intensive rehearsal, and planned practice across a variety of settings.

West Metro Learning Connections has developed and currently offers social skills therapy in small groups, using an integration of multiple approaches and follows each session with therapeutic recreation so clients can practice their newly acquired social cognition and social skills in a variety of setting and with a variety of facilitators.

This presentation will address the philosophies, approaches, strategies, and curricula, as well as present a sample structured social skills therapy group.
